DON's Deal: Travel Perfectionist Part 2

So you've seen my packing system and my carry on essentials, now I'm going to discuss The List. I'm laughing already because I know this sort of crazy is supposed to be reserved for your family and close friends, but whatever. Read on, fellow travelers!

It bothers me greatly to see her shoes not in a shoe bag. I'm sick, I tell you.

The List is an Excel spreadsheet with tabs listing out everything I need to handle and pack before a trip. It has been cultivated over time into the specific, giant thing of beauty I have today. The Pack List is discussed below, but the other tabs contain the stuff I always need for, say, a trip somewhere cold (ie hats, gloves) or to a wedding (wrap, sewing kit). For this upcoming trip to NY, I will cut and paste the "workout" list on my standard "pack" list before I print it out. You know, in case I get crazy and workout. I also keep sheets of my standard packing list stacked on a clipboard in my closet so I can always run through one on the fly.

The "Pre-Travel" Checklist I'll discuss in my next post. The "Dogs Checklist" has three sections: traveling with the dogs, leaving the dogs with a sitter, or taking the dogs to daycare. Just making sure I have vaccination records up to date or have printed out instructions for their care or have enough of their food on hand has made the day-of-travel so much easier.

My standard checklist is all my staples plus anything I could possibly need out of my travel bin, where I keep all my travel size toiletries and supplies. It also has my carry-on checklist. Here's a snapshot:

Do I need all this stuff on every trip? No of course not, but just seeing it on the list helps me decide that rather than rely on my memory.

In conclusion, my friends, I recommend spending a little time typing out what you travel with and adding to it by hand when prepping for your first trip. Soon you will have a packing database that makes forgetting anything a thing of the past!

I am SO amazed by this. I need to start creating mine! I despise packing, and I think this would make my life so much easier!

I am totally impressed! I need to have a spreadsheet like that! Especially the dog packing list - without fail I forget the tug-of-war rope or an extra water bottle every time!
