Exactly one year ago, 12 yr. old Nicholas Faibish was mauled to death by his two pit bulls, Ella and Rex. Yesterday, the case finally went to trial. Maureen Faibish, Nick's mom, has pleaded not guilty to felony child endangerment, after leaving her son locked at home with two aggressive, breeding pit bulls who had tried to bite the boy earlier in the day.
As some of you know, I work with the vicious and dangerous dogs of SF and spent many months with Rex (Ella was shot on the scene). Rex was eventually euthanized, and while I never saw him act like anything other than a sad, lonely pup desperate for attention and to give kisses (always looking as he did in this picture of him), I'm perfectly aware that he was an extremely dangerous animal.
It is truly sad to see a mother go to trial after losing her pets and her son. Hopefully, if anything can be learned from this it is to be a responsible pet owner and parent, to learn your pet's limitations, to spay and neuter your pets, and to not be so stupid as to place a child in such a precarious situation.

Dog Mauling Case Moves Forward
